How This Calculator Works

Most alcohol calorie tables are lookup lists: you find "beer" and read a number. That breaks down the moment you drink a 7% IPA instead of a 5% lager, or pour a generous glass of wine. This calculator works from the two numbers printed on the bottle, pour size and ABV, so it stays accurate across anything you drink.

From Pour to Calories

ABV is a volume fraction, but calories come from mass. Ethanol is lighter than water at 0.789 g/mL, so the alcohol volume has to be converted before it becomes energy:

Ethanol grams = Volume (mL) × (ABV ÷ 100) × 0.789

Calories = (Ethanol grams × 6.93) + (Carbohydrate grams × 4)

The 6.93 kcal/g figure is the net metabolizable energy of ethanol, not the 7.1 kcal/g you get from burning it in a calorimeter. The difference is the thermic effect: oxidizing ethanol costs the body energy, so slightly less is available than pure combustion suggests.

A 12 oz can of 5% beer works out to 14 g of ethanol, which is 97 calories before a single carbohydrate is counted. Add roughly 12.6 g of residual malt sugar and you land near 147 calories, which is why beer is dense compared with the same alcohol taken as a dry spirit.

Standard Drinks

The calculator converts everything to standard drinks so different beverages can be compared directly. A US standard drink is 14 g of ethanol, the amount in a 12 oz regular beer, a 5 oz glass of wine, or a 1.5 oz shot of 80-proof spirits. A UK unit is 8 g, so UK figures are roughly 1.75× the US numbers.

Understanding the Results

Days of Deficit Erased

This is the number worth internalizing. If you are running a 500 kcal daily deficit and a night out costs 900 calories, you have erased 1.8 days of dieting. Three such nights a month is roughly a week and a half of effort gone, without a single "bad" meal appearing in your food log.

Minutes of Brisk Walking

The offset figure uses a MET value of 4.3 for brisk walking and subtracts the resting metabolic cost, because you would have burned that energy anyway. What you see is the true extra work created by the drinks, not the inflated gross number that exercise machines display. For a 165 lb adult, one 12 oz beer takes a little over half an hour of walking to cancel.

Hours Clearing Ethanol

This is the part other alcohol calculators leave out, and it matters more than the calorie count alone suggests. The body has no way to store ethanol and treats it as a mild toxin, so it goes to the front of the metabolic queue. Everything else waits.

Siler and colleagues measured this directly: after roughly 24 g of alcohol, whole-body lipid oxidation fell by about 73%. Your body does not stop needing energy during those hours, it simply burns the ethanol instead of the fat you were trying to mobilize. The calculator estimates the window from your total ethanol load and a population-average clearance of about 8.5 g per hour.

The practical consequence: alcohol does not just add calories, it pauses fat oxidation while those calories are cleared. A late-evening session can suppress fat burning through most of the night, which is part of why regular drinking blunts fat loss more than the calorie arithmetic alone predicts.

The Yearly Equivalent

The weekly projection converts your annual alcohol calories into a body-fat equivalent by dividing by the energy density of fat tissue, about 7,700 kcal per kg. Treat this as an illustration of scale, not a forecast. Real weight change is self-limiting: as weight rises, so does the energy cost of carrying it, and the curve flattens. Why Alcohol Calories Behave Differently

They Are Not Satiating

Liquid calories do a poor job of triggering the fullness signals that solid food does, and alcohol calories are worse than most. They tend to be added on top of normal intake rather than displacing it, so a 600-calorie evening of drinking rarely means eating 600 calories less.

They Come With Company

Alcohol also lowers dietary restraint. Reviews of the topic consistently find that drinking occasions are associated with higher food intake, both during and the following day. The calculator counts only the drinks; the late-night food that follows is on top of the figure it reports.

Mixers Often Cost More Than the Alcohol

A shot of spirits is 96 calories. Put the same shot in a mixer carrying 20 g of sugar and it is 176, which is the figure the Mixed Cocktail option uses; a sweeter or larger mixer pushes it past 250 without adding a drop of alcohol. The results table shows the ethanol and carbohydrate split for exactly this reason: switching mixers is usually the cheapest change available, and it does not require drinking less.

Drink Reference Values

These are the per-serving defaults the calculator uses, tracking USDA FoodData Central entries with serving sizes from the NIAAA standard-drink definition. Anything you drink that differs can be entered with the Custom option.

Cocktail calories assume one shot of spirits plus a sweetened mixer contributing about 20 g of sugar. Real cocktails vary enormously; use the Custom option for anything specific.

Drinking Guidelines

The calculator compares your intake to two published thresholds. The NIAAA sets heavy drinking at 15 or more drinks per week for men, or 8 or more for women, and defines binge drinking as 5 or more drinks for men, or 4 or more for women, within about two hours.

The per-day figure — up to two drinks for men, one for women — comes from the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the 9th edition. The 10th edition, covering 2025-2030, replaced that numeric limit with unquantified advice to drink less, so there is no current-edition number to compare against. This page keeps the 9th edition's figures because they are the most recent quantified federal guidance, and labels them by edition wherever they appear rather than presenting them as current.

These thresholds are about health risk, not body composition. Staying under them does not make the calories disappear, and no amount of training offsets the risks that come with exceeding them.

Accuracy and Limitations

The calorie figures are solid, since they follow directly from pour volume and ABV. The interpretive figures are estimates:

Pour size: Home pours are famously larger than standard servings. A "glass of wine" is often 7-9 oz rather than 5. If you free-pour, enter your real volume with the Custom option.

Clearance rate: The 8.5 g per hour figure is a population average. Actual ethanol clearance varies with sex, body size, liver mass, and drinking history, and can range roughly 6-12 g per hour.

Suppression window: The fat oxidation effect is well established in direction but varies in magnitude between individuals and with what was eaten alongside the alcohol.

Behavior is not modeled: The extra food that tends to accompany drinking is not counted here, and for many people it exceeds the calories in the drinks themselves.
